Passing the Baton -
A Message from the Director

Gratitude is a word often used in recovery. It is a lens we use to change our perspective when we begin to wallow in self-pity. It is an attitude adjuster when we feel that we have not gotten what we think we deserve. It can also be a feeling of exuberant thankfulness to God when we realize how lucky we are to be alive and not hungover, hungry, and homeless. I have used it in all of the three previous circumstances during my recovery. Today, as I write this, it brings a totally new perspective to my life.

If you had told me ten years ago that I would be the Executive Director of Jericho Road, I would have told you to start seeking some serious help for your delusional nature. I cannot comprehend the circumstances that have brought me to this place but do know that I “made a decision to turn my will and my life (my thinking and my actions) over to the care of God” when I did the Step Three prayer.

I am grateful that God had a plan for me and that the 12-Steps have showed me how to get out of the way so that I could live it out (when I am driving the bus, I spend more time in the ditches than on the road). I am grateful for the many, many people that have freely given their time, energy, and wisdom to me so that I can pass it on to others.

Most of all though, I am extremely grateful to this community we call “Jericho”. It is a community of people who have shown me what unconditional love in action really means. It is a community of people who were not afraid of meeting me where I was at and took the time to point me in the right direction, sometimes in willful defiance. It is a community of people who allowed me to make mistakes to see the growth that would result from them and not judge me if it happened again. I cannot and will not ever forget or stop loving these people nor the ones to come.

As the baton passes from Hope to myself, I will continue to lead to ensure that this community will be here for the next person who desperately needs what I needed. This I promise.

Blessings to us all,

Kevin Williams
Executive Director
